Laptops & Computing

Laptops are the most expensive electronics decision most households make, and the one where the specification sheet misleads the most. We look at sustained performance rather than peak numbers, at whether the memory and storage can be replaced later, and at the ports you will need a dongle for.

What actually matters

The specifications that change the answer

  • Sustained performance, not the boost clock printed on the box
  • Whether RAM and storage are soldered or user-replaceable
  • Screen brightness in nits, because 250 nits is unusable near a window
  • Port selection versus how many adapters you will end up carrying

What to skip

  • Discrete graphics on a thin laptop unless you genuinely game or render
  • 4K panels under 15 inches, which cost battery life for little visible gain
  • Extended warranties priced above 15% of the machine

A short list, deliberately. Each one is here because it answers a specific question we keep running into, not because it pays well.
