Monitors & Displays

A monitor is the component you look at most and replace least often, which makes it worth getting right. The two decisions that matter are panel type and how you will connect it — most disappointing monitor purchases trace back to a cable or a port rather than the panel.

What actually matters

The specifications that change the answer

  • Panel type: IPS for accurate colour, VA for contrast, OLED for both at a price
  • USB-C power delivery wattage, if you want one cable to a laptop
  • Whether the stand adjusts height without a stack of books
  • Pixel density relative to viewing distance, not resolution in isolation

What to skip

  • High refresh rates for office work, where 60Hz is genuinely enough
  • Curved ultrawides for a desk under 120cm wide
  • HDR certification badges on panels without local dimming
